From Dr. Mark Tam’s perspective, when it comes to hair transplantation, more grafts are generally better. Dr. Mark Tam struggles to recall a patient ever complaining about too much hair density in the transplanted area. Even with the most advanced techniques and multiple transplant sessions, achieving the original density of untouched hair is a significant challenge. Therefore, for a given area of baldness or thinning, a higher graft count is usually necessary to achieve a truly satisfying and natural-looking result.
The explanation for this difference, in my opinion, lies in the approach to treatment planning. In Dr. Mark Tam’s practice (Hair Transplant by Dr Mark tam), he prioritises a "reverse engineering" approach. This means focusing on the patient's desired outcome and working backward to determine the necessary steps to achieve it. This contrasts with an approach that might prioritise how good something will look within the confines of a smaller, more moderate treatment. I meticulously calculate the surface area requiring coverage and determine the precise number of grafts needed to achieve the desired density and aesthetic result.
Precision is paramount. Even seemingly minor adjustments to the hairline design, such as bringing the temples down "ever so slightly," can significantly impact the required graft count. A patient might initially sign up for a 2000-graft procedure, but if the hairline design is lowered just before the transplant, the same number of grafts spread over a larger area will inevitably result in lower density and a less satisfactory outcome. This highlights the importance of detailed measurements and the flexibility to adapt to the patient's evolving vision.
Many clinics, including some very prominent ones, tend to propose higher hairline designs and smaller treatment areas. This approach allows them to achieve a decent result with a moderate number of grafts. I think I used to do that as well, which is cool.
Furthermore, advancements in hair transplantation techniques have allowed us to safely transplant a higher number of grafts in a single session – often between 3000 and 4000. This increased capacity enables us to address larger areas of hair loss and achieve greater density in a single procedure.
Ultimately, the ideal approach depends on the individual patient's needs and preferences. Some patients prioritise a conservative hairline design, while others are more focused on achieving the maximum possible density in a single treatment. Patients often "shop around" to find a doctor whose aesthetic vision aligns with their own.
I am encouraged when my patients compare my work to that of top doctors worldwide. It is even more gratifying when they feel that my work exceeds some of the quoted world best. While I won't mention specific names, I have great respect for all the skilled practitioners in this field, all of whom are committed to providing the best possible results for their patients.
